This is a very dangerous time we are in! The minds of the people on Unc’i Maka (Grandmother Earth) are choosing to focus on a new way of life that is hurting us all in the global community. This way of life chooses war, hurting one another physically and verbally, and continued desecration to Unc’i Maka in taking more than what we truly need in her resources. These decisions not only hurt our own People, but the animal nations are dying in large numbers to extinction by this new way of life we are accepting. Unc’i Maka is going to have a hard time to continue to bring food to all life. These decisions need to be changed very soon and are in each and every one of your hands more then ever. Respect to the spirit of life needs to be brought back; boundaries need to put back into place and faith needs to be present in everyone’s life once again. — Chief Arvol Looking Horse (19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe)
“This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.” — The Hopi Prophecies

There is a creation story, told by the Native Americans about how the earth was formed. The earth was covered in water and when the animals grew tired of flying and swimming, it was the wisest of them, Grandmother Turtle, who swam to the bottom of the ocean and brought dirt to the surface, a gift from the creator. As each animal took some dirt and placed it on Grandmother Turtle’s back, she grew large enough to become the land we rest on. The story goes that turtles are slow because they carry the weight of the world on their backs; never more true than now.
As a firm believer that we are expressions of universal consciousness, I pay attention to signs… and the gulf oil spill is a big one.
Ironically, the Gulf Coast Oil Disaster is threatening the life of the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, an endangered species whose habitat is the Gulf of Mexico. Because the turtle is the Native American symbol of Mother Earth, the message couldn’t be more stark; greed and consumption are driving the world to the brink of destruction.
When faced with disasters of the magnitude of the Gulf oil spill, we can feel helpless and uncertain, but the truth is our voices are a powerful force and our thoughts can shift creation.
The paradigm shift into a world that honors the earth begins with our own habits. What can we give away? How can we simplify our lives so that we spend more time pursuing our spiritual path and less time consuming things we don’t need? How can we speak out for the earth? What can we give up, for the earth? For example cutting back on meat and jet travel are vital to the earth’s well being. How can we support the animal populations? One half of earth’s species will be extinct within 100 years, unless we act. If we don’t have time to fight for a better world ourselves, how can we give our support to those who are fighting to save the earth? Easy!

Pursuing more money and power will only condemn future generations to a nightmare scenario. We have to be better stewards of the earth.
Because we are expressions of universal consciousness and its inherent intelligence, we need to make the shift into a new way of thinking. We can restore the world. We can save our environment, but saving the earth requires what the yogis call Tapas, an element of The Eight Limbs of Yoga. Tapas is an inner strength or fire; a willingness to take on a difficult task as a sacred duty.
Listen to the turtles, they’re trying to tell us something.

Let me play devil’s advocate Ms. Eyrie. Personally, I’m a Jew, so we are all about activism and arguing with God about the state of the world. However, if I were a Buddhist, and all about accepting the suffering and submission to the veil of tears that is our sojourn on Earth, what does it matter? This world is but one blink of Brahma’s eyes as he sleeps on the lotus growing out of Vishnu’s navel. There are infinite more worlds, hopefully less screwed up. The link to the wonderful retelling by Joseph Campbell of the story of Indra’s palace construction is here: http://www.wisdomportal.com/Enlightenment/IndraUniverses.html
Ha, I like the idea of you arguing with God about the state of the world. I think you would make an excellent advocate. Thank you for this link, an awesome retelling of this story from the incomparable Joseph Campbell. Beautiful paintings, by the way… see them at http://www.mercurywired.com/
