Holiday Shoppers Hijacked by Merry Mob

Old fashioned Santa Christmas Card Graphic

Here in the West, we have contributed some unique traditions to the holiday season; Coca Cola created the Red-Coated Santa and Adam Sandler contributed The Chanukah Song (Hanukkah Song). So why not merge the holidays and social media in a new behavior worthy of cultural anthropologists?

In a strange form of performance art made possible by the proliferation of cell phones and the Internet, flash mobs may be coming to a mall near you. Wikpedia describes the phenomena of Flash Mobs as “a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse.”

Actually, this could describe “shopping” in general.

In this video, unwary holiday shoppers suddenly find themselves immersed in a choral extravaganza. There is something hilarious and inspiring about watching the energy in the crowd change from disengaged to collective participation. As crowd members join in, the ritual of shopping transforms into a transcendent moment.
